Roki Josphats: 'Life after Big Brother'

Roki is considered as the face of urban grooves in Zimbabwe with his popular song ‘chidzoka’. He says his song ‘chidzoka’ tells a story about a feeling of being lonely and being away from home. His music is enjoyed by many in the country.

Roki looks at himself as a role model to his children especially his two sons and other people that love his music and who want to be part of the music industry. He has five children from different mothers. He is not married. When he was asked in the show Makosi today about his first love he said, “Music is my first love.” Since he has got two sons, Roki says he usually goes out with them for shopping and does whatever they want. He says he has never really talked to his sons about same sex marriages because he has never really of thought of that topic.

He went to Big Brother Africa in the year 2012 where he talked more about Zimbabwe’s music. He says he entered the Big Brother house because he wanted to gain more attention and greater publicity from the people in Zimbabwe as well as in Africa as a whole.

When he was talking about his life after Big Brother, Roki says he is more into art and he owns an arts centre in Harare. He is a painter and loves drawing. He has got students whom he supervises in the art centre. He says one of his students made a paint of him as a thank you gift. Roki says he loves listening to his songs and he is also good at dancing. He is also a dance choreographer especially for his music videos. He recently released a song featuring Pauline where he shows his hiphop dance moves.

He says he wants his hair to look like Sonic the hedgehog.

Roki says he is inspired by P.Square, African artists from Nigeria who are becoming international artists. He also loves pop music, hiphop and African music is his number one.

Now looking back at Roki in Big brother Africa, we always saw him as one of the coolest guys. He was loved by many Africans and I almost thought that he was going to make it to the finals. I actually blame Maneta a Zimbabwean girl who was representing the country in BBM who was so against Roki. I actually think she is the reason why Roki was kicked out of Big Brother. I actually think she saw a potential in Roki becoming a the Big Brother winner. To me, their fight symbolized lack of disunity amongst Zimbabweans but other people actually think that it was just a publicity stunt.

I also think that he cannot look at himself as a role model especially looking at what he did to Maneta, slapping her in front of Africa. To me it shows that he is more like encouraging men to beat up women, which is not a good thing at all. It’s not like I am judging him but what I am saying is he could have solved what whatever problems he had with Maneta in other ways not through violence.
